Stickers, cotton candy, gold streamers, Spice Girls music...ingredients for a truly stellar party. And oh boy did Rookie Mag come prepared. Add a sea of absurdly fashionable teens into the mix and you have what I'd like to declare the most stylish Saturday in all of Los Angeles.
I attended the Los Angeles Rookie Mag meet up yesterday and had the opportunity to meet the incredible Tavi Gevinson. This 18-year-old writer, editor and all-around stylish girl is a true inspiration (and probably the closest walking definition of "precocious" I've ever encountered).
Any qualms I had about spending an afternoon with junior high and high school girls were quickly shattered when Tavi came on stage. She read an excerpt of her essay "Build Your Own Throne," a creative, DIY manifesto of sorts that's more articulate than most college papers I've read (including references to Dante, Susan Sontag and others). I encourage any and every creative girl to give it a read in the Rookie Yearbook Three.
"I think it’s freeing to realise that you have your own consciousness and can choose whatever you want to include in your world," Tavi wrote in one of her editor letters, "That you are your own best friend, and can even be your own role model." Words to live by.
Every girl at the event embraced this independent Rookie spirit and, of course, style! Check out some of the fashionable Rookies I met...
